Sabayon 5.5 KDE as a guest & VirtualBox 4.0.2

Postby pissnaround » Thu Jan 27, 2011 14:12

I just did a fresh install of Sabayon 5.5 in the PUEL version of VB 4.0.2. I know Sabayon comes with the OSE guest additions but I would like to update to the 4.0.2 PUEL additions. Usually when you try to install the PUEL version on something with an earlier OSE version you get a warning about removing the old version first, then installing the PUEL version. I would just like to know if someone knows the best way to do this before I screw something up. :?

You need to remove virtualbox-guest-additions, xf86-input-virtualbox, and xf86-video-virtualbox, then install the GA.

Note that the GA in portage and entropy (4.0.2 is in portage) does not enable udev mouse detection. However, it works when installing GA using the ISO in virtualbox.

Unfortunately, Sabayon guests (at least), seem to freeze periodically.

Thanks. Do I need to reboot after I uninstall everything and then install the GA's or can I just install the PUEL additions after removal of the OSE additions then reboot?

No reboot needed between uninstall and reinstall. I normally reboot after installing the GA, but that may not be needed.

hmmm, I don't remember the mirrors being this slow. Does Sabayon have a util to find the fastest mirrors? I'm trying to download the kernel source so I can install the GAs.

Don't use pkg.sabayon.org.

The cross-lfs mirror is usually good. ftp.klid.dk is usually fast, once the download starts.
