Finally there is hope for virtualbox.

17 June 2009 -> Sun Microsystems has announced the first beta release of VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 1. The major additions to VirtualBox 3.0 so far is guest SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) support for up to 32 virtual CPUs, Windows guests now support Direct3D 8/9 applications and games, and there is now OpenGL 2.0 support for Windows, Linux, and Solaris guests.

Guest SMP support has been a feature that's long been lacking from VirtualBox to provide better multi-core support, but it's finally arrived! To use the guest SMP support in VirtualBox, a processor with VT-x or AMD-V is required. It's also exciting to see OpenGL 2.0 now being supported across Linux/Windows/Solaris guests. It was just late last year when VirtualBox received OpenGL acceleration and then in January when it supported Direct3D acceleration. This hardware graphics acceleration was initially limited to Windows guests, but in April they finally pushed out Linux 3D support and now in June we have OpenGL 2.0 support. Of course, the host OS must also have OpenGL 2 capable hardware and drivers installed.

Beyond these major changes that have worked their way into the first VirtualBox 3.0 release, there is also various bug fixes that have went in since the VirtualBox 2.x branch too. The VirtualBox 3.0 Beta 1 release announcement can be read on the project's mailing list.

Maybe direct disk access like vmware in the future ???

Update:
Beta 2 is out if you want to try this out.

Please report all bugs to virtualbox for their software and if you think it is SL post here or if not sure then post here and we can inform you about pushing it to virtualbox or similar.

This is beta software and can do anything from make your hair fall out to actually work the way it should so use caution.

Hope for virtualbox.

I use vmware for the simple reason I can run a host OS with guest OS and both run at 2 or 4 cores as is installed in the PC / Laptop. Vmware has direct hd access from inside the guest and can even boot the host OS that is running from the same HD.

Virtualbox used to lag behind that you can only have 1 core / cpu even if you have 20 cores you only used to be able to make use of 1 core / cpu.
Now virtualbox can use upto 32 cpu's / cores if installed on host currently only in the 32bit versions of virtualbox, it is called SMP semitrical multi processing.
Virtualbox does not yet have direct disk access, can not boot from usb connected device last time I checked.

So there is now hope for Virtualbox users who want to run a host OS and mess around with a guest OS and have it running at a more decent speed / performance.

What the fuck am I doing here .

VirtualBox-3.0.0 has been released! It's not in portage yet, but I doubt it will take too long.

I hope this one fixes my USB mouse issue.
