VirtualBox Error

Postby catsup » Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:13

Yes there's a million other threads talking about this but they simply point to the wiki page but doesn't solve the problem. After installing VirtualBox (I did it through equo so it would be v2.1.14) and creating a GuestOS, i get the following error:
Code: Select all
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Re-setup the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu or Fedora should install the DKMS package at first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

Followed by this:
Code: Select all
Virtual machine 'Windows XP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup.

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
IMachine {ea6fb7ea-1993-4642-b113-f29eb39e0df0}

The first error tells you what to do but didn't work
Code: Select all
mylinuxboxname ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Password:
sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found

as per the instruction of another thread, i even tried to modprobe but that did nothing, too. any other suggestions?

Likely you would need to install and or extract the kernel and link to /usr/src/linux

eselect kernel list

If doing it with equo the kernel install wlll add a extra line to grub.conf or grub boot menu and you can choose to ignore this new same 2.6.29 or remove it.

Then retry the kernel specific virtualbox modules.

catsup this might be a dumb question but, is the vboxdrv module loaded?

modprobe vboxdrv
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.
