Virtualbox 2.02 & Spawning session problem

Postby ashley194 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:45

I installed virtualbox 2.02 last night, as it was available in Portage (after downloading from SUN website, then placing download in usr/portage/distfiles). Everything whent along fine, compiled in about 15 mins. The problems started after I launched the program & had a play with PC-BSD 7.0, all Virtualbox would show was 'spawning session'. Only way out was to kill the process by ctl+esc! Found out after some Googling that it appears to be an issue with the new Virtualbox.
I opened Vitual machine 0.50, but that only gace me a small window, nothing more (again ctl+esc). So I thought to install VMWare, only found that was masked  Is there any way short of uninstalling Virtualbox 2.02 & reinstalling 1.64 to get me back into virtual land once again? I had XP, OpenSUSE 11 & PC-BSD installed on my Virtualbox, but they are merely for learning so can be deleted easily. Any ideas?

Thanks :D

if you're a portage person, then just emerge -C virtualbox && emerge virtualbox-bin-<version>

This problem with Virtualbox 2.02 is because the 'vboxdrv' module is not started automatically. Earlier versions used to warn about it; this one doesn't, it just sits there trying to spawn the session. So the simple remedy before trying to start a VM is:

Code: Select all
modprobe vboxdrv

at the console as 'su.'
