Virtual Manager (virt-manager) and kqemu

Postby SGSeries2 » Fri Jul 11, 2008 5:49

I didn't really see this elsewhere, so I figured I'd post my findings if someone else was wondering what was up.

Some people may be wondering about that little kernel/hardware acceleration checkbox on the third page of creating a new 'fully virtualized' machine in virtual manager's new machine wizard, and why it is greyed out. That is the way I found it by default at least on my 64-bit version of Sabayon 3.5.

I installed kqemu, did a modprobe kqemu, and the checkbox became available. I used to use virt-manager "back in the day", and I did notice a speed increase when kernel/hardware acceleration was enabled. Qemulator and Virtualbox 1.6 are pretty cool, too.

Anyways, this was with libvirt 0.3.3 & virt-manager 0.5.0.

Just FYI for anyone who's looking into using virt-manager.

Maybe you could put a "how to" on the wiki?

Can you gently help me ?
I said you installed kqemu...

...and I also tried...but without results...

I tell you which steps i took:

emerge-webrsync (I'm under uni. proxy)

emerge qemulator ... ERROR gcc compiler 3.xxx needed

equo install gcc 3.xxx
gcc-config gcc 3.xxx
source etc profile

emerge qemulator ... OK ... installed also qemu (as I thought...but I also thought it will install kqemu... :( )

emerge kqemu ERROR ...

tatonezabayone carota # emerge kqemu

Since you still haven't figured out about pasting in the IRC channel, or what needs to be done as root,
eselect kernel set 1 must be done as root, not user.
