Virtualisation - Sabayon - Win4Lin. How?

Postby terryshania » Thu Mar 13, 2008 9:20

I have successfully installed version 3.4 of sabayon and it is my wish to install Win4Lin, desktop pro v.4.5 which I purchased online and downloaded as an ISO file.
I burned the disc and checked it. Everything is OK.

My question is, " how do I get the application to install into sabayon."

I have checked the forums and have not found any mention of this procedure. Once win4lin is installed correctly I can then install windows xp into win4lin which will enable me to have both OS's working together in virutalisation at near normal speed.

As I am fairly new at this I would appreciate any help given. I understand portage may be an option but I found it a little confusing for a newbie.

many thanks.

I think your question belongs here: http://win4lin.net

I assume they offer support.

Hi terry

I think you might get more info from the Gentoo forums here http://forums.gentoo.org/
I just typed "win4lin" into the search box and it came back with a few items on installing win4lin.
I would have thought that there would be an INSTALL or README file on the iso CD that would tell you how to install the product.
Problem with SabayonLinux/Gentoo is that most things are installed from source and it looks like Win4lin gives you an RPM binary package to install, which would be more suitable for Ubuntu, OpenSuse, etc.

Not sure whether this one will help http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-46 ... n4lin.html
They try to install Win4lin using the "rpm" command. If you don't have the rpm command you might have to install it in a "root" konsole by typing "emerge rpm".

I don't think many people here use Win4lin as most of us use VirtualBox.

All the best

Thank you to all who have answered and offered suggestions. I will try each and every one of them in order to satisfy myself and to learn. I will also try virtualbox.

Just a quick note. I tried virtualbox for the first time a couple of weeks ago (I'm also running Sabayon 3.4) and found that it worked beautifully but "XP" kept "aborting" on it. A few searches suggested that it was the version that was wrong and I strongly advise updating virtualbox to the latest version in portage (1.5.6). Since I updated "XP" has worked without problem.
