How to get the non-free multimedia stuff working

Postby hoodwink » Sat Aug 19, 2006 6:11

I'm too new on x86-64 systems to know the answer. Is it possible to get the extra codecs, plugins, etc. working under Firefox? or is that not yet possible on 64-bit systems? ie can anyone view and hear Movie Trailers on x86-64?

Pointers to ahowto that I can RTFM would be appreciated.

I am aware of the legalities, so no disclaimer is necessary.

They are there on this in a chroot jail (whatever that is) but it means they run as 32 bit so yay!

I had to emerge the mplayerplug-in to get stuff to work. I'm not having a great time with .wmv files. In firefox the mplayer plugin kicks in and gets to 99% and just sits there. In Konqueror I can get it to work 50% of the time. I can get sound but no picture the other 50% of the time.

I'm at a loss as to getting video files to play properly in the 64 bit system.
