Installed - but cant boot?

Postby mdrtec » Sun Nov 13, 2005 4:21

I installed the system right off the DVD and had the bootloader install into the MBR yet when I rebooted it only showed my Kanotix that is on a different harddrive?
Any ideas?
thanks

I think that Gentoo Linux Installer (that I'm not the developer), has installed GRUB in the wrong MBR. You can fix that by booting RR4 and reinstall grub manually on the right drive. You could bug GLI developers too, since GRUB code isn't changed (apart from adding grub menu options).

How would you re-install manually to the right drive (same problem) :D

/dev/sda --> first drive
/dev/sdb --> second drive

Boot RR4

fire up konsole and then:

Code: Select all
sudo su
grub --no-floppy
root (hd1,x) # the second disk, substitute x with the right grub partition numbering
setup (hdx) # select the hardisk where you want to install the bootloader (MBR)

If you need any further information, please read the Gentoo Handbook on http://www.gentoo.org

Thank you! For the quick reply and the lovely package (RR)

(My problem it seems was fixed by doing this command
grub> configfile (hd1,1)/boot/grub/menu.lst )

I had to manually set the boot flag for the boot partition in fdisk before my install would boot.

this should be a GLI bug... I'll try to check in GLI changelog (GLI can be found at http://dev.gentoo.org/~agaffney)
