Installing virtualbox from rigo corrupts display on reboot

Postby georgelappies » Sat Nov 03, 2012 19:00

Hi

I install the virtualbox-bin package, it pulls in the 3.6 kernel as a pre req. I am using Sabayon X KDE version. My laptop has an ATI HD 5000 series card in.

Code: Select all
george@devbox ~ $ fglrxinfo
display: :0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.2.11762 Compatibility Profile Context

When I boot with the 3.6 kernel the display is messed up once kdm starts. I tried adding "nomodeset" to the boot parameter and running the grub config util again but it did not help.

Any advice?

You should install virtual box corresponding with your current installed kernel.
The kernel number is being displayed next to the name of the virtual box package.
When not, a new kernel will be pulled in and installed.
Installing new kernels without using kernelswitcher should be avoided cause it breaks the system.

Try to install the kernel again this time using kernel switcher.

1) run update

Code: Select all
equo update

2) view installed and available kernels:

Code: Select all
equo search linux-sabayon

3) latest kernel is at the moment linux-sabayon-3.6-r3, so run:

Code: Select all
kernel-switcher switch sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.6-r3

(avoid this kernel for the moment if you have nvidia as it has a bug, or see solution)

4) check if video driver is set correct:

Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

will show you (if you have Nvidia):

    Available OpenGL implementations:
    [1] ati
    [2] nvidia *
    [3] xorg-x11

If you want it to be ati do:

Code: Select all
eselect opengl set 1

then finish upgrade with

Code: Select all
equo deptest

followed by:

Code: Select all
equo libtest

then reboot
