NVIDIA. You are right, without the login screen.

I think my problem is due to missing nvidia driver. It is possible to install it anyway?

I got a laptop with an Nvidia card and I didn't have any problems after the initial SL9 installation, nor after updating the whole system. However, because I use a separate LCD screen I install the Nvidia configuration tool. But then after I setup my separate screen I go to "restart" and after that the screen was blank with a cursor blinking only. I had make a hard reboot to get all started again. This would happen occasionally on older SL/Nvidia versions.

I am also experiencing a blank screen and blinking cursor on start up, and as far as i know, i have an integrated graphics card. looking through /var/log/messages shows:
Code: Select all
kdm[8696]: X server died during startup
kdm[8696]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled

i can startx and it pops up 3 xterms on tty7. then running kdeinit4 startkde allows me to run things like firefox and mplayer, but the styling and interface remain like startx. running sudo xdm offers an unstyled x login that does not do anything.

Apparently, I had an ATI card. I ended up following these instructions (http://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=27595) and uninstalling all the xf86-video packages except intel and ati before using eselect opengl set ati. I also spent a bunch of time reinstalling packages, but I don't think it made a difference.

I have the same problem. After a system upgrade, the last week, my sistem doesn't start, the login screen is not shown.
My card is an ATI and I'm using open source drivers.

Any idea?

Regards!

If you card is a legacy nvidia card you have to use the open source driver. Latest xorg drops legacy cards.

If you don't have a legacy card and still having issues, than file a bug with all the information such as card and log files. There is no way to help when there is no information given.
