Watching movies from ftp..

Postby pepe999 » Sat Oct 08, 2011 23:08

Hi all,
I have problem with watching movies from my Cisco MediaHub. I can connect into it, copy, delete, anything but I can't watch any .avi file at all. As I remember I could watch movies from it some time ago but not now. It might be related to the latest Gnome 3 updates. The MediaHub is mounted as ftp://192.168.1.104/ in Nautilus but not in /home/ftp directory. When I open an avi file in VLC, the program starts downloading the file into the computer and it should not, it should play movies from the location..
Thanks, pepe999

Code: Select all

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'ftp://192.168.1.104/media/videos/Serials/CSI/CSI/12.01'. Check the log for details.

Code: Select all

I think that the problem is more serious because Movie Player won't open at all. There was too many GB of updates that the system is completely messed up. I will have to reinstall the system and see if that helps..

I have reinstalled the system but haven't tried watching streams yet. Conky doesn't work which is bigger disaster than playing movies from an ftp. I would like to say "thank you" to the bunch of gnome developers. They have completely rubbished Gnome environment. Even Linus T. has said that Gnome 3 is awful and I agree. :!: :pukel:

Conky solved by removing a line in the script (own_window_type override), however playing video files as a stream from an ftp doesn't work like before. Some ideas how to turn the system off/restart might also be useful as I haven't noticed any turn off button in the system yet...

edit: Installing gnome-shell-extensions should add the turn off option to the user menu..
edit2: No turn off option found yet..
edit3: http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet
The Power Off... menu entry is hidden by default. You can make it visible by pressing the Alt key in the user menu.
This is crazy, I have no words for this..
