Postby speck » Sat May 30, 2009 18:45

I can't get any sound in my laptop, model HP dv6985se. My sound card is:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC268

Have you already tried the alsaconf then alsamixer commands as root user in a Terminal/Konsole window? See also the thread viewtopic.php?f=56&t=16799&p=96044&hilit=Realtek+ALC268#p96044 which may be of help.

Ok, now the sound works. Very thanks! :-)

Only one question: KDE still show one message at start saying: "ALC268 does not work, falling to PulseAudio"...

Probably a bug of some kind, but if your audio is now working I wouldn't worry about it. Audio in Linux is a minefield: just take a look at the diagram on the PulseAudio page in Wikipedia and you'll see what I mean. There's more than a little truth in Linux Hater's article on PulseAudio: Pulse my audio.

pulseaudio is super new at the moment. a lot of people have problems with it. But if your audio is working I would ignore it. Your system is probably just falling back to a different backend like gstreamer or xine or something. "If it ain't broke don't fix it" hehe.
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

Remember to mark your thread [Solved] if your issue is fixed.

A workaround for those people who are getting the message at start saying:
that your Model of sound card does not work, falling to whatever is next on the list

If your sound is working when the sound system falls back, then to stop message from appearing at start-up, try this;

Open System Settings
Double click Multimedia
Select Audio Output
Select the first item
Click on Defer
Click on Apply Device List To...
Ensure that all items are selected in the dialog window that appears and click OK
Click Apply

Example my system on start-up "ALC662 Analog does not work, falling to ALC662 Digital"
So I open System Settings - Multimedia (as user), select Audio Output (the first item on left-hand side of Multimedia window) then I select (right-hand side of window) HDA NVidia (ALC662 Analog), then click on Defer, Click on Apply Device List To... and finally Apply. Then close all open windows and reboot

It works for me
Have fun

Good job joeoden, very thanks, I think this really solve the problem of most people.

In my case, I have tried this, but my other option is PulseAudio... and the result is horrible.
