Is Sabayon for me? ( Ubuntu user )

Postby beko » Wed Sep 27, 2006 15:26

Hi... I saw Sabayon on distrowatch & it's attractive desktop make want to try it but I never used any distro depend on SRC (Portage) at all .

I used many distro's but never tried Gentoo or any distro based on it.... So my question is will it be easy for me to give Sabayon a try ?

I don't mind to learn something new for me but will I be able to find basic (how to's) to work with SRC (Portage) ?

Right now I am using daul boot Ubuntu+windows xp(for just games) & very happy with it but in the same time I really want to try Sabayon ... please advise.

Gentoo Documentation is huge
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Index:HOWTO
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Main_Page

Sabayon's Wiki
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index. ... =Main_Page

Plus you have IRC channels and forums

Portage is easy - It's what turned me on to Gentoo

I highly recommend tho that you get the latest version. The official announcement of the mini should be very shortly, it's on linuxtracker.com already. The 3.0 mini has the latest bug fixes and has XGL and aiglx. Lxnay will be posting more info shortly with an official announcement.

The DVD versions are out already for the 3.0, but the 3.0 mini's are the latest and IMHO da best yet.

Give it a whirl - you have nothing to loose with the livecd

Thank You wolfden for your fast reply... I was downloading the DVD image but I cancelled it after I saw your answer & now I am downloading the Mini Image & will give it a try & will take a look at the links you recommended.

Another 2 questions ....Is there any installation guide ( I didn't see it on Wiki)? Will i have any problem with making Sabayon run in daul boot with windows xp?

Thank you again

It depends on your setup. For me I found that it mapped grub with the partitions on the wrong drive. Fortunately I had a backup of my original grub partition. Also, if one of the machines is an "eMachine" you will have to be carefull. On some e-Machines any modifications to the partition table will stop windows from booting. About the only solution I found in that case is to go ahead and use Linux to repartition the drive the way you want it and then use the eMachine's restore disk to reinstall Windows. The restore disk claims it will reformat the entire drive, but I found it left my partition table alone.

Dual Booting is not a problem - it should detect and setup your windows partition just fine

Installationg guide? - it's a 5 step wizard - dunno what your specifically looking for. It's a snap to install

Portage should be somewhat familiar if you are used to aptitude. I haven't been using SabayonLinux very long, but here's my routine for installing a package.

1.)
Code: Select all
emerge -s

Emerge -s searches for packages with whatever you place afterwards. IE: emerge -s gaim looks like this:
Code: Select all

It returns all packages containing that name, and all that information. If you are looking for a package and want to look deeper, use emerge -S (capital S). This will search descriptions as well as names.

2.)
Code: Select all
emerge -pv

This command does a verbose (-v) pretend (-p) merge. It simply lists the packages that would be installed, their USE flags, and the download size (if you already have the file downloaded to your /usr/portage/distfiles directory, it size will say 0kb).

Here's what I see when I do this command with gaim:
Code: Select all
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] net-im/gaim-2.0.0_pre20060517  USE="audio dbus eds gnutls gstreamer krb4 mono nas nls perl silc spell startup-notification static tcl xss -debug -doc -tk" 0 kB [2]

If you noticed from above that I already have this version of Gaim installed, it only makes sense that no dependencies are necessary right now. However, by default, Gaim's USE doesn't include SILC support. To change this, you can do two things.

3.)
If you decide that a program has too many dependencies, or you don't use Gnome and you want to install nautilus without gnome support (kinda weird, but whatever), you can either use
Code: Select all
USE="gnome" emerge <package>
or, as I prefer to do, edit a certain configuration file to save that flag for later.
To do so (assuming you want to say within the command line) just type
Code: Select all
nano /etc/portage/package.use
.
The next step is to make sure you won't be adding a new line for a package that already has one. Push CTRL+W and then type in the package name. If the line exists, simple add the flag you want (the flag to enable a flag, -flag to disable a flag). Other wise, add a line starting with the full package name. The format is category/application. To check what category your app is in, you can either guess, or refer back to your emerge -s (or -S) information.

4.)
If you want to try out a beta version of a piece of software that you see is in Portage, but masked (like my Gaim 2.0Beta3), then simple add that package name to your /etc/portage/packages.unmask file. For Gaim, I simply did this:
Code: Select all
echo "net-im/gaim" >> /etc/portage/packages.unmask

Note the double redirection symbols! Do NOT use just one. Doing this will nail your packages.unmask file, replacing all of it's contents with that single line.

5.)
The last step is to simply install your software!
Code: Select all
emerge

Equivalent to "apt-get install", this installs whatever package you choose (and the necessary depenencies).

And that's pretty much how to install stuff. Note that step 2/3 and step 4 are optional, but highly recommended, as they are easy to do and help you get things just the way you want them.

Also note that for any steps 3 and higher you need root privileges.
