xgl and nx

Postby iamacooldude » Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:00

I know this may not be directly related to Sabayon, but how(or could you) start a xgl session in nx? I tried executing a script when nx loged in, but it created the display on my real display, not the nx window. If nobody here knows, where would be a good place to ask this again? At the NX forums, XGL forums, or another linux forum?

i dont think there are nx or xgl forums by the way.

umm i did play around with freenx a little a few months ago but didnt get too into because i couldnt get the web login working.

anyway i am supprised it didnt work because as far as i know xgl is just an application running on the system and since you can run other applications you should be able to run this one.

maybe freenx is just blocking the autorun applications. i dont know what the exact command in the startup that sabayon is using for xgl but check your startup and see what the command is and tyoe that in terminal when you load.

i dont know what script you tried already but i am htinking that it had something to do with your actual x server instead of the freenx login.

hope something i said helpes. c ya later.

I found out that if I ran another user on my real computer, typing these will get XGL running(compiz to be exact)
Code: Select all
compiz --replace gconf &
gnome-window-decorator --replace &

When run in NX, I get this.

Code: Select all
compiz: No composite extension
sabayonuser@sabayonx86 / $ The program 'gnome-window-decorator' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 172 error_code 1 request_code 148 minor_code 33)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

It seems NX won't let me run compiz. I check, and XGL display was set up to run for every user, so there must be either:
a.)a config problem
b.)nx won't run XGL
c.)some other thing I may not know

Does this help with my problem?

maybe that you could try with AIGLX.
XGL won't never work under NX. Maybe AIGLX yes.

Thanks for the help.
I did some quick research on AIGLX and it seems to be built into X.Org, right?
If that is so, could you run it from sabayon? If you can't could support be easily added? I would love to get compiz to work through NX, and if AIGLX will go through with NX, then I would love to see it in action in sabayon.

ummm i think with the new mini it has aiglx but i think it said that it was not for ati cards at the moment becasue of the drivers... but i think you may already have aiglx on there if you are using later versions... dont trust that too much because i cant remember what aiglx is really...
