Fell back to RR4 and portage is updating fine. What changes were made in 3.0 in the way of network configuration? I want to upgrade to 3.0, but I don't want to lose my ability to manage my system in the process.

Sorry, back on 3.0 and it won't enable a lengthy reply with Code. Basically, it's using Orinoco_pci driver for wireless which should be fine as that's what the other distros use. I ordered a DVD today, and will reinstall with that when it arrives. Until then I'll keep trying and make do with emerge-webrsync. Thanks for any/all suggestion you may have.

All is well again! I was all over iptables as I knew it had to be a port restriction. Finding nothing there, I eventually went into my router, and there I found some restrictions that seem to have created the problem. I was doing some experimenting when I was trying to set up wireless on sabayon and another distro, and forgot about some of the changes I'd made there. I just emerged portage successfully! Hope that was it. Thanks to all who offered support!
