Unable to update portage.<SOLVED>

Postby arjay » Mon Sep 25, 2006 23:33

Are any of you having difficulty with emerge --sync? I've been receiving error messages since yesterday when I reinstalled sabayon. Errors are:
Code: Select all
MOTD brought to you by motd-o-matic, version 0.3

receiving file list ... done
io timeout after 181 seconds -- exiting
rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(171) [receiver=2.6.8
]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (3402116 bytes received so far) [generator
]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(465) [generat
or=2.6.8]
>>> Retrying...

I've tried switching mirrors but the result is the same. It eventually tells me that it will retry later. Am I missing something?

Update, for any with a similar problem. I finally used:

Code: Select all
 emerge-webrsync

which updated portage. After update, I was able to emerge --sync without a hitch.

aaaaaaargh..spoke too soon :oops:
Code: Select all
io timeout after 180 seconds -- exiting
rsync error: timeout in data send/receive (code 30) at io.c(171) [receiver=2.6.8]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (3436823 bytes received so far) [generator]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(465) [generator=2.6.8]

!!! Rsync has not successfully finished. It is recommended that you keep
!!! trying or that you use the 'emerge-webrsync' option if you are unable
!!! to use rsync due to firewall or other restrictions. This should be a
!!! temporary problem unless complications exist with your network
!!! (and possibly your system's filesystem) configuration.

Nobody else having this problem? :?:

Yep...internet's working fine. Just ran glsa-check which accessed the net and dl'd some things, and I'm online with it right now. I just don't seem to be able to update portage. This last time, it started, and managed to update a few files before timing out and returning the error I posted. I've changed mirrors, but that didn't make a difference. I just emerged VIM without a problem too. I'll keep trying. Appreciate the response and any suggestions are appreciated.

Still unable to connect. Dl'd mini 3.0, verified cksum, installed, no joy. I can connect, browse, but cannot update portage. I get the exact same errors regardless of the mirror I select, so it has to be something in my configuration. I'm online and posting this now with Zenwalk, as I was unable to post with Sabayon previously. Any ideas of where I should look? I had a lot of udev errors in dmesg I was going to post, but couldn't from sabayon. Appreciate any ideas you may have as I can't go much further without an updated portage. Thanks..

have you searched bugs.gentoo.org for a possible solution or even googled for it yet? this seems pretty specific and I'm thinking you might have done something during the install or right after it, did you set net.eth0 to boot?

try

# rc-update del net.eth0

and try again after rebooting

Yeah, I've been googling. I can't post my error because I can't post anything from sabayon, but I'm getting the overlay error initially when I try to sync. I tried to fix that by emerging layman per the instructions, and it gave me another error. I can't go any further with it I'm afraid. My install options were simply Sabayon res=1600x1200. I'll give it a few more shots, then go back to a previous version if I can't make any progress with it. Will try your suggestion on net.eth0. Thanks!

I tried deleting net.eth0, but it didn't seem to be there. I received an error. Am hoping this will post so that I can post my error messages.

I still can't post my errors. This has gone on about long enough for me now. It just isn't going to work on my T-Pad A30P. I'm going back to a previous version.
