Banshee Messed Up Audio

Hey,

Here comes another Dumb Newbie Question.

I finally got around to trying out some other functions of the full 3.0 32 bit install, and put in an audio CD (Compaq Pres 5201).

I tried all of the different players that came installed. All of them played sound fine. Some I liked better than others, but I've been used to either iTunes or WMP, so was looking for a bit more functionality and "look."

Searched around Internet, looking for either of those ported to Linux, and you already know what I found. One potentially nice option was the CodeWeavers Wine thing, but then I found Banshee. Good review, looked worth a try.

So I tried my very first emerge session, using Terminal rather than trying a GUI front end. I was very proud when pages of code started flying by (yes, I know all of you guys are geniuses at this, and can write code in your sleep, but I'm very new at it), and after three instructions, it seemed everything was OK.

Then I couldn't find Banshee, so used the Run Command in the KMenu, and voila, there it came. Looked pretty good, had most of what I had hoped for.

Except for one thing. Volume. No sound.

Went back and tried the previously installed players, and now nothing had any sound output.

Also now there are no "system" sounds.

Volume looks OK. Nothing muted. All the mixers I can find look OK.

Has Banshee somehow taken over the playback engine and rendered it null and void?

Have I done something stupid? Is Banshee even compatible with Sabayon? Should I (and how would I) uninstall Banshee?

I'm glad I can give you guys some laughs in your busy days.

Use amarok, there and done, that's the best out there

iTunes will work under Wine

unmerge banshee and then run as root alsaconf && /etc/init.d/alsasound restart and then play with your favorite mixer (eg kmix) to make sure all your sounds are on

Thanks.

A followup, in case others run into this:

I tried Amarok, and you are right, I like it. BUT, it freezes my trackpad every few seconds, so I can't use it and work on anything else at the same time. Kaffeine also did this.

I did what you suggested, and think I didn't properly "unmerge" Banshee.

However, I ran the script you gave and restarted, and the sound mixer / engine had reset. So now Banshee is working well, and the other players also.

On Banshee, there are no mouse/trackpad freezes, so I can open a lot of apps and keep working.

Thanks again.

hmm...track freezes?? hmmm...have you tried asking any of the other irc for like #amarok if they've seen that problem? I'm curious is this is known or just yours specifically
