USB not showing up

My USB/6-in-1 Media card reader ports on my Gateway MT6451, Specs Here, don't work.

Funny thing is they worked right away on ubuntu..but thats about all that did work right away..ha. I am new to linux and I have been trying to mess around with hal but don't really know what I am doing to well.

If anyone can help that would be great, tell me what you need. Thanks

Have you tried re-starting? I had a problem with my USB device, and it disappeared when I restarted.
P.S. I am a n00b too, so dont think I'll be too helpful.
