My pc keeps freezing...hardware conflict?

Postby wilky » Sat Aug 11, 2007 0:02

My pc constantly freezes at random times, and i dont know where to start.

Let's get down to business and here's some information on my pc.

-Intel Pentium D
-3.40GHz CPU
-512MB RAM
-ATi Radeon x1300/1550 Series
-Maxtor 6V200Eo Driver
-Sabayon x86 3.3b mini

I started out using Windows XP SP2, and i had kinda the same problem with that (it was something to do with installing a new theme that caused my pc to get random BSoD's). But that got fixed by just uninstalling the theme. Then everything was going great until i installed Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, and my pc would just freeze ALL THE TIME!!!! It got so annoying that i decided to go back to Windows XP and start all over again, but guess what...BSoD! The crashes on Windows XP were few and far between though, and it didnt really bother me becasue it happened like once or twice every so often. But me being me had to go back for more and try out Linux yet again. I installed Sabayon x86 3.3b mini, and installation went great. But now the old problem of the annoying PC FREEZE is back!! It happens mostly when i refresh, open or close a window on my browsers (Firefox, Konqueror and Opera), but it does happen even when im not in any browsers.

I've read lots of forum posts on the same subject, and usually i wouldn't post anything on a forum, i'd just figure it out for my self. But as of yet it seems that this sort of problem depends on the users pc information and there isn't just one set answer. One of the most common answers that's has been popping up is CPU temperature being too high due to a faulty/ crappy CPU fan. I must say that when using Windows XP, i did get the od few crashes where i had Task Manager open, and i spotted my CPU being really high, and then my computer crashed and i got a BSoD, could that be the reason for this? If so does anyone have a solution to this?

I'm a total newbie when it comes to linux, so i appologise in advance if i reply to one of ur posts, asking u to 'dumb ur message down' for me. lol.

Oh and one final point is that when ever i start up my pc, when everything is loading it usually says [OK], but i get this one message that says "FATAL unable to access /system.map, file may not be present" (or something along those lines). could this be the reason im getting the freezes? Once again my appologies if this sounds dumb, but computers aren't really my thing. lol.

Anyways thanks in advance, and i know this is quite a long post, but i thought it was best that i gave you guys as much information about my situation as possible. lol.

Once again THANKS!! :D

"FATAL unable to access /system.map, file may not be present"

You need to find out exactly what this is talking about. It could very well be whats the cause of the problem, and most likely is.
