3.4x86 X loads to a blank screen with NVIDIA GeForce 440Go

Postby archwndas » Sat Jul 28, 2007 17:08

Hi there,
I downloaded and installed the final 3.4 release for x86 in my Sony VAIO Laptop with an Nvidia GeForce 440Go. The default NVIDIA drivers coming with Sabayon, do not support this graphics card. So I had to download manually and install the usual way (runlevel 3 no xdm e.t.c.) the Nvidia drivers:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run

and then change accordingly the /etc/X11/xorg.conf replacing the "nv" with "nvidia". Unfortunately after startx or reboot with xdm enabled in rc-update at the default runlevel, no matter which NVIDIA driver I installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9639-pkg1.run or a newer one, I got a blank screen and nothing more than that.

So there is a problem there. Could someone tell me what to do to enjoy Sabayon in this laptop?

There is also a network problem there but I will post a new thread about that.
Best to all the funs.

older video cards are supported on nvidia legacy so
Code: Select all
emerge nvidia-legacy-driver

Well that legacy driver is the nvidia-legacy-drivers-1.0.7184.ebuild and this doesn't support Composites and other stuff needed for our purpose. The only driver which does that is:

nvidia-drivers-1.0.9631-r1.ebuild or
nvidia-drivers-1.0.9639.ebuild

but both have problems as after emerging them I end up with a blank screen after typing:

startx

It should work however as I was able to use those drivers in the past with Gentoo on the same laptop. So what is the problem?

Does anybody know?

simply because they are old....so the only solution is to switch to nvdia-legacy that works with your cards, no other solution for that except a HUGE regression in kernel and drivers and Xorg and everything....simply get an older version of sabayon because what you want is not supported from nvidia anymore

I assumed that a reason why I get a blank screen with Nvidia drivers is that the default kernel in Sabayon 3.4 x86 is a SMP one while my system is a UP one. So Nvidia with SMP kernel on a UP system may cause problems. You see, this may be the reason why in the past I didn't have problems with those drivers and Gentoo. I had compiled a UP kernel. No SMP at all. So I am recompiling now a new kernel modifying the .config and removing a lot of unneeded stuff in the kernel to make it lighter. I emerged --sync so I am trying with 9639 NVIDIA drivers. If this doesn't work as well then I will consider to try something else.

By the way, I believe, since there are still a lot of UP systems out there that Sabayon should offer the choice of installing a SMP or an UP kernel during the installation.

There are quite a lot of bugs still, but their deserve their own threads.

you assume wrong...smp kernel is automatically disabled when booting if it doesn't find an smp motherboard

My nvidia mx 4000 works without 3d acceleration . I think I'll just let it slide until a new card and or computer comes along.

I am downloading Sabayon 3.3b.miniedition. Do you think it will do the job? I couldn't find any older version. Still haven't tested the custom kernel. Hope it works.
