you need to install nvidia-legacy-driverhuuggee wrote:I put business edition (3.4) on this C840 last night.
interestingly enough i ran into a couple of issues with the display too.
every time i booted the live DVD i was getting a black screen, but could VT on F1.. etc
ended up manually editing the xorg.conf down to a vesa driver and restarting xdm (/etc/init.d/xdm restart). This allowed me o run through installation mode.
Once installed i tried nvidia as the xorg driver again, but just a black screen and no error in the Xorg.0.log file! The i tried the Xorg nv driver and that is currently working (for business edition) Screen is at full 1600x1200.
glxgears is reporting
483 frames in 6.7 seconds = 71.970 FPS
339 frames in 5.8 seconds = 58.023 FPS
which isn't grand
That said, DRI isn't working yet.
The other thing i did last night was to emerge --sync and layman -S, to update and install the latest nvidia drivers (100.14.11-r10)
now xorg log reports
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go GPU installed in this system is
(WW) NVIDIA(0): supported through the NVIDIA 1.0-96xx Legacy drivers.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for
(WW) NVIDIA(0): more information. The 100.14.11 NVIDIA driver will ignore

Looks like i need to drop down to an earlier version, but it's early days and i haven't got that far yet.
Sorry for the long post, just thought i'd share my findings.
p.s. card is 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440 Go] (rev a3)
