sugestion on WiFi hardware for desktop

Postby lleb » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:23

i have a customer who currently has Vista Home Prem. installed, but i have a better then 50/50 chance of converting them to Linux, specifically Sabayon.

They will be requiring some WiFi networking and I am looking for specific hardware that I can suggest they purchase that is both Vista and Linux native compatible so when I get to remove Vista from her system I am not fighting for hours on end to get WiFi up and running.

many thanks.

Someone else also asked a similar question and I posted a link to a website that lists all linux compatible wifi cards and their chips + support for linux.

It should be in either x86 or in general forums or search for my name and you should find it.

As for 3.4 loop3 or 3.4 final will be able to tell you in 2 days after my torrent is finished so I can test it.

A good general guide to buying pc hardware is the more persons having it the more likely it has good support or you can find good support for it in both windows and linux and or bugs have been found and fixed or is in the process of fixing.

ipw2200 , ipw3945 , broadcom 43xx , ( atheros / netgear ) is well covered but have to check as 90% of each model chips is supported and working well and then there is some stupid odball tweaked junk from the manufacturers that is so buggy it is not even worth it.

This goes for both win and lin.

As for future I have finished testing kernel 2.6.22-rc5 and wifi support is almost 30% of the kernel or it looks that way so things will improve.

PS> broadcom 43xx chips is used by both Apple mac mini intel / apple laptops whatever they are called now as well as dell. Dell has experimented with ipw3945 intel chips wifi and has stepped on a "bear trap" with it so they are back to broadcom based wifi.

Hope this helps.
