First action...
Try switch screen output on your Asus with (Function) keys.
Second: (I don't know Mate), but if you have NVidia (search your repository for NVidia-Settings programme),
then you can setup your screen output and save to xorg.conf (as standard)

Can you tell me, pls.
Do you have either Windows on your laptop to check your monitor accepts signals from HDMI
or (if no Windows)
Do you have a BlueRay play to check, your monitor accepts signals from HDMI?

Then there will be different options.
-Setting in Asus monitor must be changed.
In case, you get a signal (a pic) on your monitor by using Windows or a BluRay player, then
-What laptop model you have and which Intel graphics adapter?

Btw., in Mate, is there a Display configuration programme, where you can identify the connected (internal and external) monitors?
