Switching to nouveau

A while ago I posted a recipe to switch to nouveau. Unfortunately, I just tried it, and it doesn't work. I get a blank screen with a cursor.

Is anything in that post obsolete? is there a better howto anywhere?

Did you remember to do the following?

eselect opengl set xorg-x11

Also, did you add nouveau to /etc/conf.d/modules so that it is loaded at boot?

Do you have modesetting configured?

echo "options nouveau modeset=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf
update-modules

Have you blacklisted all NVIDIA modules except for nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf?

blacklist nvidia
blacklist rivafb
blacklist nvidiafb

Is nouveau configured in your running kernel?
