Adding printer in LXDE [Solved]

I'm trying to add a printer to a fresh install (updated) of Sabayon 6 x86 LXDE.
I go to System Tools, click on Manage Printing - and nothing happens, no error or dialog box, nothing.

The printer, a Samsung ML-4500, worked fine, and indeed had been auto-detected in Ubuntu and Sabayon 5 Gnome too, without problems.

I'm confused. I don't remember having to use CUPS with Sabayon before. CUPS seems geared to networks, but mine is a stand-alone desktop PC connected to an unshared printer with a parallel cable.

I've tried fresh installs of Sabayon.

Recently I've used Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS with this same PC-printer combination, and they detected the printer automatically.

Hi I had the same problem last night.

First you must add net-print/splix-2.0.0 via equo, then
use cups as described earlier and voila....

CUPS is also geared to networks, but it can be used on your unshared printer with a parallel cable too.

the LXDE version of Sabayon is very basic, there is only the software that is strictly necessary, so you have to get the additional software to make your PC work, probably if you used the Gnome or the KDE4 version of Sabayon, it is very likely that your printer would have been recognized properly.

I installed Sabayon Gnome, and that didn't make it easy to install the printer either.

Anyway, I reinstalled Sabayon LXDE, with the latest updates, plus splix.
Then I tried CUPS, but it required my printer's URI, which I don't know.

I'll mark this problem as solved, though in fact I'm abandoning LXDE in favour of Gnome.
