Screen resolution problem

Postby Mark Wilson » Tue Nov 13, 2007 16:00

I don't seem to be able to get Sabayon 3.4f to run at the maximum screen resolution I know
my monitor is capable of - 1680x1050 @ 60hz. When I first booted the live disk, I got
frequency out of range so I then tried pressing [F5] and adding res=1680x1050 refresh=60,
and all I got was 1024x768. Trying res=1400x1050 refresh=60 worked fine and I have
installed with this although I already know my Compaq 7500 monitor can handle the higher
resolution. Also, accelerated graphics does not enable even when, as suggested by a note
included with the disk from Linux-Man I pressed [ESC] on boot and typed sabayon xgl
opengl=nvidia. I know the problem is not with my NVidia Geforce4 based card as XGL/Compiz
works with OpenSUSE 10.1. I have tried installing the 9xxx driver from NVidia's website but as
I do not have an internet connection on the machine on which Sabayon is installed it needed
to build a kernel module. However, it claimed not to be able to find the kernel headers
even when I tried directing it to every instance of kernel.h I could find in /usr.

Try running the command: xorgcfg then you will be able to set which screen resolution that is the closest to what you want.

Thanks, but I'm afraid I tried xorgcfg and the only combinations on
it's list with horizontal resolutions higher than the 1400 I seem to
be stuck with had vertical resolutions higher than 1050 e.g.
1600x1200, which my monitor would not support. There did
not seem to be a dialog for manually entering res/refresh.
