Inspirion 8600 with No Sound

I'm a new user of sabayon. I've recently installed sabayon business edition after trying to install mulitple versions of the free versions.

This version installed OK until I rebooted and logged in a general user. Upon login, I see the following:

The volume windo is open with the volume at zero.

I have no sound.

I have no control over my sound buttons.

I am using a dell inspirion 8600. I opened the kde info center and looked at the soundcard info. It shows the following:

I have been a linux administrator but it's been several years ago. I am disabled and haven't worked for several years due to the disablility.

I think I have an IRQ conflict. Can some one help me? Thanks in advance.

These days, the BIOS and the OS should handle the IRQ's for you. I'm not saying it is impossible to have an IRQ conflict, but I have not seen one in a long time.

Probably the volume is set to zero, and probably Sabayon cannot read the sound buttons (assuming you mean the multimedia buttons on the laptop itself.)

Look and see if there is a little speaker icon in your taskbar. If so, click on that and you should be able to adjust the volume. You can also use it to open the mixer panel and see if all the inputs are set to a volume significantly greater than zero.

I have some similar problem. I have a dell vostro 1500, running sabayon 3.4f, and I have no sound at all. The sound device doesnt seem to be loaded at all.

Any tips of how I could fix this problem is much appreciated!
(Usually runs ubuntu but wanted to give sabayon a try)

Have you guys tried running alsaconf as root in a Terminal window, to set up the laptop's sound card?

Then, when that is done, run alsamixer (also from a Terminal window) and make sure nothing is muted (the M key toggles) and all sound levels are non-zero). Then run KMix and check the same thing and also GNOME Volume Control, just to be sure (I find the latter more reliable that KMix on my Acer laptop). Also, right-click on the KMix icon in the top panel and select Select Master Channel.. and try selecting Front as the channel representing the Master Volume (at least in my case that's the one that works on my Acer laptop and enables the keyboard function keys on my laptop to control the volume and mute).

When I started alsaconf I get an error (couldn't find module snd) before the configuration program starts. In the alsaconf it finds a sound (intel) for me which looks ok, and the program seems to exit correctly.

If I recall correctly I've seen that error message too when running alsaconf, but it still worked. Make sure you do not select the "legacy card" if that is displayed; select the real card.

Before you run it, I recommend you first emerge the latest ALSA packages:

Once you've emerged the above, run alsaconf and alsamixer again.

Don't forget to hit TAB in alsamixer to select the different pages. And don't forget to use KMix and GNOME Volume Control and set them both to show all the configurable parameters. I sometimes find something shown as disabled in one that is not shown as disabled in the other, that's why I like to double-check (perhaps they will be consistent in your case, you never know).

You may also have to play around with the settings in K Menu > Control Centre > Sound & Multimedia > Sound System. I cannot be precise a) because I'm not using SL 3.4f or SL BE, and b) because it depends not only on what version of SL you are using but also what versions of packages you have installed (it has even changed for me on SL 3.4 Loop 2b over the months), but you might try clicking on the Hardware tab and changing Select the audio device to Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) and ticking the Full duplex box. Sorry, I been away on vacation.

I tried using the volume control buttons. No go!

I tried alsaconf. I't didn't work.

I can't even get a clear screen. I get a window with the title "volume control". The bar inside of it is to the far left. No keyboard button or multi media button works to minimize it or close it. Any other window is hidden behind it. In other words, It's always in front.

Hmm, by looking in this thread, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/131133 it seems that the kernel had some bug for the particular audio driver im using (regression). The way the guys solved was by using the latest alsa-drivers. But since alsa-drivers are included in the kernel by default I have to recompile the kernel and not including the ALSA-support in the kernel, and then add the alsa-drivers.

(I downloaded some drivers and when i tried to install, it complained that ALSA already was included in the kernel. I haven't bothered of recompiling my kernel yet)

If I recall correctly I've seen that error message too when running alsaconf, but it still worked. Make sure you do not select the "legacy card" if that is displayed; select the real card.

Before you run it, I recommend you first emerge the latest ALSA packages:

alsa-utils-1.0.14

The suggested packages was already installed on my computer
