Upgrading vs. DIY

I was wondering. I'm using 3.3 mini at the mo and i regualrly do emerge -uD system then use gentools to clean up the mess. Question is, if i manually upgrade my packages, with success, then is there any point actually upgrading my distro, will it actually be any different?

You could just upgrade your packages as you go and this works great for people that are new and need to figure out how the whole process works. Do keep in mind the longer you wait between world updates, the more u will have to deal with. World updates also prevent you from ever having to reinstall SL, you are always current.

SL works great as is and if u just upgrade packages that works too. You can than just install the next versio of SL when it comes out. Some have the notion that zomg I must upgrade instantly up install and I have no clue what I am doing!1!1! World update will cause problems as it will bring in new problems and you may have to limp along for a bit till they get it fixed. The price u pay for bleeding edge.

It's working great for me at the moment. I'm only doing emerge -uD system and updating some of my favourite programs. Theres nothing hard to it, you just need to find something to do while it all compiles

I'm getting to an advanced stage in my linux usage so i think i may move over to gentoo in the near future. I will have to wait until i have better internet access though (wireless ftl). Also im currently building a Quad Core System so i think compiling times may be a thing of the past soon

move on to gentoo??? You are using Gentoo

Upgrading your distro works by updating your packages. Gentoo isn't like Debian in that sense. People run gentoo for years and years on a single install and stay updated thru world updates.

I mean plain old generic gentoo, make my own personal system

Maybe i should try LFS instead...
