Error when emerging Docky from "Steev" overlay [Solved]

Postby gav989 » Tue May 25, 2010 5:14

Hi,

trying to install docky through portage. so far i have added the 'steev' overlay and manifested the ebuild using the instructions here:

http://gentoo-overlays.zugaina.org/steev/gnome-extra.html.en#docky

when i try to emerge it however i get an error and a log file (see below)

has anyone encountered similar problems?

any ideas on how to install docky?

log file:

Re: error when emerging docky

You should contact the owner of that overlay, we only support our own overlay and mainline portage issues.

It looks like a missing dep on dev-dotnet/gtk-sharp-gapi though.

Re: Error when emerging Docky from "Steev" overlay

Postby gav989 » Tue May 25, 2010 9:00

oops, sorry my understanding of portage is a bit limited, i didn't realise it wasn't supported here. my fault

as it goes, your advice solved the problem, so thanks for posting

i'll put what i did below in case it helps anyone

i added PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" to the end of my make.conf file, accessible with

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/make.conf

then as root added the 'steev' overlay with

Code: Select all
layman -a steev

then set up the local portage directory thing with

Code: Select all
mkdir /usr/local/portage/gnome-extra/
mkdir /usr/local/portage/gnome-extra/docky/

i then put the ebuild downloaded from http://gentoo-overlays.zugaina.org/stee ... l.en#docky into this directory by saving it to desktop and:

Code: Select all
cd /home/gav/Desktop/
mv docky-2.0.1.ebuild /usr/local/portage/gnome-extra/docky/

(obviously replace 'gav' with your own username)

then prepare it for install with:

Code: Select all
cd /usr/local/portage/gnome-extra/docky/
ebuild docky-2.0.1.ebuild manifest

then ran into the problem described above so i had to

Code: Select all
emerge dev-dotnet/gtk-sharp-gapi

though others may not need to do this

then to install it:

Code: Select all
emerge docky

works a treat. puts it in applications>accessories in my gnome menu. sorry if instructions are a bit patronising, i'm fairly new to linux so i wrote out every step in case other newbies were reading

thanks again for your help Thev00d00

Re: Error when emerging Docky from "Steev" overlay [Solved]

Postby albfneto » Tue May 25, 2010 12:10

yes, do. You used the local Overlay Method.

but sometimes, seem to me more simple to search the packages, in two different overlays and install using the regular, commom portage, as in these commands:

Code: Select all
layman -a FIRST OVERLAY
layman -a SECOND OVERLAY
layman -S

then, the two packages, the main and the dependence will be taken from the corresponding overlays by using the regular command:

Code: Select all
emerge -av package

to install the package and its dependence.

To locate packages in Portage, you may use commands (emerge, esearch or eix) or an GUI as Portato, or see in these sites:

http://packages.gentoo.org/

http://www.gentoo-portage.com/

For search packages in all Overlays, using this URL:
