Question about the USE flag [Solved]

Postby Jeff91 » Sun Aug 30, 2009 22:59

For the USE flag in the make.conf, do I need to list every flag I do not want with a '-' in front of it or if I just exclude it from the USE list will it be left out?

Mmm yes that is a useful page, I've read over it once or twice before. The thing I am really still kinda hazy on is this:

Portage only passes the options listed in the make.conf USE, if this is the case why would you ever need to list things in the USE var with the '-' in front of them? Because wouldn't listing them with the minus out front just be the same as not listing them at all or am I missing something?

make.conf is global that is why

you use the files in /etc/portage/ for individual files

you should really go thru the gentoo handbook to further understand

"-foobar" - Turn off the flag all the time
"foobar" - Turn it on all the time
" " - (exclude from make.conf) - turn off except when default for that flag is on.

That really cleared it up for me, thanks much!
