Takes hours to compile gparted 100% CPU

I'm getting better at the whole "emerge" thing, but I'm having a problem right now.

After 40+ successfull update using emerge or portato, I tried to update gparted...

It's been close to an hour now and I see HD activity, but the system is really slow and doesn't respond as usual... Is it normal and what should I do?

...now after waiting a long time, the got a black screen and no activity at all...

I understand, but what if the system doesn't react as if it is frozen?

Could it be possible it hangs and stays like this? I tried a CTRL-ALT-F1 with no success...

I noted very similar problem. After syncing and emerging portage I initiated emerge gcc and after sometime - poof: it works (I can hear computer working) but I can't see any progress (when installing bash ussually shows me hundreds of lines of informations). I finally made hard reset and tried once again - this time it worked. But the same problem occurred when installing stepmania (emerge stepmania).
It completely ignores my keyboard (I can't change terminal, switch tabs in konsole or anything) and it nearly ignores mouse moves (but ignores mouse clicks).

Should I just start to compile with additionall debug info and channel it into a file in "hope" to encounter the same problem for the third time or it is repairable?

may see that it is due to memory problems....
It occurs is Gentoo, mainly!
sometimes you may try close the compilation process, using Crtl+C during compilation.
the problem occurs when a large , or slow to compile package, as gcc, OpenOffice or GParted etc...
Remember that large packages may requires hours to compile.
In my athlon 3200, only one nucleous,
4 hours for gcc,
11 hours for XFCE!

That is an excellent point! That's how I figured out my brand new RAM in my xp3200+ box was bad when I was getting seg faults/lockups/resets emerging xorg back in 2003 with Gentoo. Did some reading and most info pointed to running memtest. Sure enough, after a few hours and the box getting warm enough, it would fail at the same address.

Despite they taken some hours to compile, after installed, the performance and working of the packages, is very good in Gentoo based Linuxes!
I use Gentoo and Sabayon, Exactly because these caractheristics, they are fantastic linuxes!
For me Gentoos are better than binary Distros, but this is a oersonal opinion...
Linux is good, because with Linux you have a free choice!
