hi i was wondering...
are the programs in the installation such as open office precompiled?
would it be better to not install them when you're installing the system .. and then compile them with emerge?

does it make any difference?

Not sure , as root use "binmerge --sync" I think it is or use binmerge after "emerge --sync ; emerge portage ; layman -S" and binmerge would then update itself , then you can search for it "binmerge -s openoffice"

Check the binmerge options or "binmerge --help" to find correct option to use.

Have you ever tried compiling openoffice?! It takes around five hours on my laptop, which is no slouch. After doing this a few times I have decided enough is enough. One of the first things I do these days when re-installing SL is to:

emerge -C openoffice
emerge openoffice-bin

I have found that the emerged binary openoffice 2.2.1 actually looks and works better than the 2.2.1 source I emerge (compile) myself. I have also found that the emerged binary successfully opens one particular Excel spreadsheet I have (it's massive and full of extremely complicated Visual Basic and macros) that causes the 2.2.1 source I emerge (compile) myself to crash. Go figure.

In my case the pre-compiled version a) looks better, b) takes much, much, much less time to emerge, c) works better. It's a no-brainer!

Oh how i wish i would read these forums before i ventured out on my own..

6hrs of emerge openoffice to get version 2.3 and it wasn't finished, killed it, read this page, and was up and running in 5 minutes.

Just out of curiosity, why does the openoffice-bin version not come as standard? As the poster mentoned above, i've also found it to open larger more complex documents which the source compiled version doesn't handle, and i'm not sure if its because its 2.3.0, but a dare anyone to tell me that OOo opens slowly, its so much faster than M$ Office 2007 to open..
