Just tested Compiz Fusion, will hit 3.4 ;) (even if it's not released yet)

I just tried the latest compiz-Fusion (0.1.5) in ubuntu 7.0.4 (set up here http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-I ... 8113.shtml)

I'm very excited with this as it seems just a stable as beryl 0.2.1 did and has more features. Not sure what's happening with emerald though. Here's a screenshot of the control center for compiz-fusion. Looks quite nicely organized.

I really hope they will include compiz-fusion in SL 3.4. Does any one know if they are going to or not?

All the best

Dave

I can see that as I suspected the project is now under the influence of those who hate or are confused by detailed options. From the look of the screenshot much of the functionality has been sacrificed in favor of integration with Gnome or Ubuntu.

I hate Gnome, and their attitude that users are too stupid to understand anything more than the simplest of options.

Hi

The screen shot I gave might be a bit misleading. You don't just get the option of tick boxes. When you click on the bit to the right of each tick box you get a screen that pops up full of options, similar to that of the beryl-manager. There's definately no functionality lost with the new compiz control-manager.
I should of gave more screen shots ;) Hope that's cleared it up. :)

Cheers

Well if ya ask me, none of the control managers have been that great yet. You still spend time hunting down where things are.

Found this great "How to install Compiz Fusion" on the wiki.
http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Latest_Compiz-Fusion

I followed it exactly without uninstalling Beryl or Compiz that come with 3.4 loop 3. Do they need to be removed in order for Fusion to work properly?

If I run Compiz with:

Code: Select all
# compiz --replace ccp --sm-disable

There is a dbus error. Compiz starts, but if I configure it nothing changes. I'm guessing that Fusion is not starting, but Compiz that comes w/ 3.4 is instead. I also have to open a new session to run Emerald because the terminal just hangs after the dbus error.

Ummm that method is really weird way of doing it

Use:
http://wiki.gentoo-xeffects.org/Compiz_Fusion

you do not need to be editing layman.cfg, or adding layman to package.keywords and layman is already installed so no need to emerge it

just add the packages to your /etc/portage/package.keywords

and emerge it

Active Plugin List update

This is where it stops. Compiz actually starts, the windows wobble and I can rotate the cube with Alt+Ctl Arrows. There are no decorations and since the terminal gets stuck after Active Plugin List update I have to close the session start a new one and then start Emerald.

From there when I try to configure Compiz, nothing takes effect. I can see and change all of the tantalizing options available but nothing ever happens.
