Cannot start a desktop environment

Postby Johnny Who » Sat Oct 27, 2012 13:30

I installed a sabayon 8 CDX on a laptop without pae, then performed an upgrade and installed mate desktop environment. LXDM wouldn` t start, so I installed lightdm, but it failed, too. Both gave a black screen instead of a login screen, and i was able to escape it through alt+f1. Then I installed slim, and it works, bu it fails to load any graphical environment. Every option results in a black screen, with an x-shaped mouse pointer in the middle, which does no react to my touchpad. What should I do to get Mate up nad running with any display manager?

The problem wouldn `t get solved, so I reinstalled, but when I tried to run
Code: Select all
sudo equo install entropy

it fetched some files, but when it sttarted installing, it outputted some error messages after installing every package. I exited with ctrl+c, but sudo, equo and emerge were rendered unusable. It complained about some glibc modules. I am reinstaling right now.

That's because most likely the Core CDX version of Sabayon doesn't come with any desktop included, how did you install MATE?

not an installer issue so moving to correct forum

You gonna have to look at the log files to see why stuff fails
