GDM won't start; only opens xdm

Hi! I just installed S10. I did the first massive update and now gdm won't start. After boot, I get an xdm screen but it won't let me login. I can access the terminal via Ctrl-alt-f2 but I'm not sure what to do next.

gonna have to look into the log files to see what is going on

make sure /etc/conf.d/xdm didn't change
