X downgrade

Postby sundance » Sun Jul 22, 2012 20:24

Hi,
is it possible to downgrade the x-server and the ati(fglrx)-driver?
The free ati-driver is not working properly with opengl and its so slow I could not believe it. With my card, which is a hd4200 its even slower than any intel chip I have seen so far.

I would really appreciate a solution for that.
Besides, I dont understand the point of it. Why is AMD stopping the support for hardware which you can still buy?? I think that was the last time I bought something with amd or ati on it.

Possible if you know how to use Portage.

But next time please, buy Intel or NVIDIA.

…or switch to the open-source driver as proposed:
Code: Select all
>> [1] [Fri, 13 Jul 2012 12:42:20 +0000] Title: Upcoming important updates for ATI/AMD GPU owners
>>    Content: Hi guys, the next week we're going to roll out an
important X.Org Server update. We are updating this
vital component of the distro to version 1.12.2.
In order to do so, we are now forced to upgrade
the AMD Catalyst Drivers to version 12.6. This version
also discontinues the support for Radeon HD 2000/3000/4000.
If you own one of these cards, you better switch to the
OpenSource drivers NOW. It is really easy actually:
make sure to have the xf86-video-ati package installed,
remove "ati-drivers" from your system, remove the following
file /etc/gpu-detector.conf and reboot.

it is definitely easier compared to downgrading xorg…

Ive done that already but, and when I speak about that, Im trying to be polite, the performance is god damn awful.

Youre right, if I had the possibility to change the video card, i would have done it by now.
The problem is, that this card is part of a notebook and I cant change it.

Downgrade via portage seems really painful, so I wont do that. I guess I have to live with it ;(
I also tried the beta 12.6 which seem to work, but not with xorg 1.12.2.

Just a thought off the top of my head would be to reinstall 9 and mask xorg and the modules so it don't upgrade it. AMD and xorg is always a pain to deal with. We try to hold off as long as possible at times as we know it effects a lot of users, but at the same time need to move forward. I've lost so much faith in AMD and linux support over the past years that I've completely rid of them of my systems.
