Login as root [Solved]

Postby jk121960 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 18:51

Hi, I have been checking Sabayon out and I am liking it, I do a lot of development work and always need root access. I tried the usual ways but it didn't work. I need to login as root, it is my own personal machine, I hold no one liable for relaying this information. I know the risks and assume complete responsibility. If you feel uncomfortable posting it please send me a private message or my email is exposed and you can use that. I am currently using KDE but I have switching desktops a lot lately trying to find my niche since the demise of Gnome2. Any information will be appreciated a great deal.

thanks

What does this have to do with "Networking and Wireless"?

Moved to 3D Desktops and Window Managers.

You should check out your kdmrc file, I can't remember the exact path for that file, it should be something like:
/etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc

You should see a line like:
Code: Select all
AllowRootLogin=false

change it to:
Code: Select all
AllowRootLogin=true

then you should be able to login as root.

Hey and thanks, I did check that out and no joy, that's actually the first place I look on KDE. I hope someone has an idea, without root I type my password like 50 or so times a day. If nobody knows perhaps someone knows how to set up Sabayon to skip the display manger all togeather.

thanks again

to start without x you have to remove xdm from runlevel

Code: Select all
rc-update del xdm boot

or if you just want to stop x for just the one session

Code: Select all
/etc/init,d/xdm stop

If you make an .xinitrc for root running startx should start whatever session you have it set to. I don't know the name for kde session but this is how you would edit .xinitrc for xfce

Code: Select all
exec /usr/bin/xfce4-session

Logging into an X session as root is giving up control, not gaining control.
The default desktop for the root user is sparse and nearly unusable on purpose.
Running the entire gui desktop environemnt as root is completely unecessary and very dangerous.,
But if you really need to use the desktop as the root user, use 'startx -- :1' which will start up a new x-session alongside your regular user one.
Use CTRL-ALT-F5 or CTRL-ALT-F6 to switch between the x displays)
but remember, doing so:
1) opens you up to several different security problems,
2) too many too easy ways to damage your system no matter how careful
your actions (example: just browsing in your home directory while
logged into KDE/Gnome/etc as root can lock you out later as yourself
due to permissions damage),
3) and, anyway logging into KDE/etc as root is *never* required to do any and all administrative duties..

Dunno why you need so much root priveliges. I don't recommend this, but you can give administrator priveliges to user.
But I repeat, I don't understand why you need root priveliges and why you want start X's on root.
For my opinion you can do everything from user account using: su, sudo, kdesu.

as from KDE-4.5, graphical login as root, is no longer possible due to extremely high security risks.
