Broken gdm/window manager/xorg.conf/video driver

Postby doobydave » Sun Oct 02, 2011 21:59

Getting errors logging into gdm (login screen has become more basic, too)
Code: Select all
none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:

Window positions are fixed, they have no borders and I cannot move them

I tried removing xorg.conf (had to hack mine to make my monitor behave acceptably), but the problem persists.

I believe it might have something to do with my monitor. I used to use Ubuntu, but the last release or two stopped outputting to my monitor (so much for bulletproof X) and the developers couldn't have been less interested to resolve the problem.

For the last month or two I have had errors on login like the ones above, but have been able to use gdm as normal (though I can't say I'm a big fan of the new one, but that's a different story). Since updating today, gdm is not well.

you tried to re-install all the gdm, xorg-server, xorg-driver and your video driver (for your video card) ?
All packages?

I have about had it with GNOME3. All worked fine until updating via equo and running 'equo conf update' yesterday morning.

Now gdm is just an ugly mess, GNOME is useless, no window decorator or management. Fluxbox works ok, despite the odd red lines appearing in some apps like Chromium.

I have tried reinstalling the following with several reboots:
gdm, xdm, nvidia-drivers, nvidia-userspace, compiz, compiz-plugins-main, gnome-shell, glibc, gtk-window-decorator, xorg, xorg-driver

I have run 'eselect opengl set nvidia' as root. My nvidia driver matches my kernel version and I get the nvidia logo at x start up.

Nothing is working.

Please help fix this or I'll have no choice but to switch to XFCE or even another distro for this box (Dell Latitude 6510).

Ok, things have improved somewhat.

I still have issues with my monitor refresh rates and resolutions. The error message quoted in the first post has existed before gnome was broken by the updates. It's a pity, as monitor is very capable. I'll have to play around with the xorg.conf again.
