Thanks for all the input.
I'll throw in that I've got the exact same video card (GeForce Go 7400) which, though nothing spectacular, has always worked like a charm.

And as for that driver bug suggested above, I'll add that I am running the notedly buggy version (270.41.03). Can I request that we get the fixed one into entropy - I noticed that it's also not available in portage.

# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] ati
[2] nvidia
[3] xorg-x11 *
# eselect opengl set 2
Switching to nvidia OpenGL interface... done

and a reboot took care of the message. It took two times with the alt+shift+f12 to re-enable the desktop effects

Or you can type:

Code: Select all
eselect opengl set nvidia

Have you read the thread by any chance?

I installed the 270.41.06 yesterday, did not pay attention to what I had before.
What I did have worked fine for me, what I have now is a little flaky when it comes to watching flash video.

Just thinking that maybe the 270.41.06 drivers are nothing to get excited about.
If I do not see another update soon, I may mask them and go back to an older version.

@ztico

Yes, I read the entire thread. I suggested what I did suspecting there might be a problem using "eselect opengl set nvidia" option as a result of the updates since the use of "eselect opengl set 2" (for nvidia) worked here.

Rest assured that from now on I will fight the urge to make any suggestions or offer assistance.

I apologize if I made you feel attacked. Your suggestion has already appeared several times in this thread, so that is why I deciced to ask.
Cheers.

I'm going to call it a buggy driver. Whether the .06 version is the fix or not I don't know. But, I forced a downgrade to the other driver listed in entropy, rebooted, and now all is well in the eye-candy universe.
Code: Select all
>>      @@ Package: x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.19#2.6.38-sabayon branch: 5, [sabayonlinux.org]
>>         Available:     version: 96.43.19 ~ tag: 2.6.38-sabayon ~ revision: 5
>>         Installed:     version: 96.43.19 ~ tag: 2.6.38-sabayon ~ revision: 5

I'll mask the upgrade and just stick with this one for now.

Thanks y'all!!

Just a note that the new driver just released into entropy (x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-270.41.06#2.6.38-sabayon) also has the same problems described in this thread. I've masked this one too.

I am glad you found a solution, would only want to caution using older drivers, the 96.xx drivers were made for the 4000 series cards.
I would think that the newer x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-173.14.28#2.6.38-sabayon would work as well.

IF it was me, I would use the newest driver that worked, also use nvidia-settings to keep an eye on the gpu thermal temp.
My only thought is that the card could possibly run hotter then normal with the older drivers
I do not know this, I have never tried it, something I would keep an eye on.
Seems the 173 drivers would be a much closer match to your card.
