Fitzcarraldo , I used ati drivers, I tried to switch both to xorg and nvidia but did not succeed.
After removal of $HOME/.kde4 directory I reinstalled kde-meta and it worked for me. I think there was an interference between the old and new packages that prevented KDE from starting normally.
KDE 4.6 does not work

If you have an AMD ATI GPU then obviously trying to switch to nvidia OpenGL libraries would not work.
