Compiz enabled, Gnome won't start

Postby chad1 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 19:44

Hey, I have compiz installed in sabayon4 x86_64 and when i enable acceleration and reboot, gnome won't start.

I have ATI radeon 200m and i have the ati drivers selected in eselect.

I'm also using kernel 2.6.27

I've had to re-install a few times, but at one point the 3d desktop was working.

Any1 able to help me out?
Thanks

if you type in a console
Code: Select all
fusion-icon

does compiz starts up without any error output?

hey Micia.

i did that in terminal, and it crashed my session. gave me a blank screen and i had to re-login

The output in terminal was very brief before it crashed so I couldn't read it

We meet again chad1 :D
well, if you can afford another crash, you could try to load compiz and redirect the output to a file with:
Code: Select all
fusion-icon &> fusion-log.txt

(to restart the XServer press Ctrl+Alt+backspace)

this will send the output of the compiz boot to the file "fusion-log.txt",
be sure that fusion-log.txt in your current directory, or you will override it!
Also, you could take a look here:

So this is a little strange, but i went to navigate to my / directory to see if there was a fusion-log, but i can't open my home folder! and right clicking on my desktop does nothing.

Oh, and i just noticed all the desktop icons are gone

The fusion-log.txt file should have been created into the directory where you opened the terminal in,
the default one is the home directory (/home/your_user_name/).
the left click thing is rather strange, try to logout and login again or reboot,
probably the failed switch to compiz have destabilized the session

Ok, I will try a reboot. I'm just updating a couple packages right now.

Is there a way to enable to boot verbose only and no graphical boot? i want to see whats going on during boot, but it loads to fast, i just see splash screen and then it starts

Okay, this isn't really a compiz problem anymore, but i restarted my computer and i still can't open my home folder.

Maybe do i need to re-install gnome?

Does it gives you some sort of error message when you try to open your /home directory, such as "Permission denied" or something?

[EDIT] I found out that Nautilus may have been disabled, try to start manually nautilus from a terminal:
Code: Select all
nautilus
