XGL ATI Problem

Postby glj12 » Sun Dec 09, 2007 2:29

I have always had XGL working properly on this box, until today. All I did was hit the restart button by mistake while it was booting up, and now it decided to spazz out on me. Now upon login, XGL does not load. Each time I type compiz --replace, all of the bars around windows disappear (as in, I cannot drag windows, they remain static). Here is a bit of information for when I type certain things...

Code: Select all
glj12@localhost ~ $ compiz
compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

When I run glxgears, I still get good FPS, but an error as well.

Code: Select all
glj12@localhost ~ $ glxgears
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
17908 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3559.600 FPS

Any ideas in terms of resolving this problem, and how to avoid it again, other than not hitting the "reset" button on the computer when it is in the initial boot sequence?

Thanks you very much in advance!

I'm not 100% sure, but Ati drivers are supposed to work with AIGLX now. Try to use that instead of XGL as XGL is depreciated.

The message Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0". does not necessarily mean that XGL is not working. For example, I had Beryl and, later, Compiz Fusion working successfully under XGL and still had that message, as can be seen below in the output that I saved at the time (see Item 1 below). All the message means is that direct rendering is not working but indirect rendering via XGL is being used instead. Now I'm using AIGLX the messages are different, as shown in the second code box below (see Item 2 below).

1) THIS WAS THE SITUATION WHEN I WAS USING XGL SUCCESSFULLY WITH BERYL OR COMPIZ FUSION:

Re: XGL ATI Problem

Postby glj12 » Sun Dec 09, 2007 18:50

Two things; neither post helped.

First comment: Nope, ATI does not support AIGLX, only XGL, you are thinking of NVidia.

Second comment: That's fine and all, but notice that you have direct rendering = yes, whilst mine does not. I believe that this is one of the many problems with mine.

Anyone care to give an resolution? I think that this is quite odd that my XGL decides not to function dies just because I hit the reset button during early boot sequence; quite touchy, no?

Also, DRI is angry:

Code: Select all
localhost glj12 # accel-manager
XGL is running
DRI not ok
XGL is running
OpenGL acceleration is available.
something set currentStatus to  0
DRI not ok
XGL is running
fglrx driver is running, AIGLX is NOT available
DRI not ok
XGL is running
DRI not ok
XGL is running

You are wrong, you should use AIGLX now.

Code: Select all
emerge ati-drivers && ln -s /usr/lib/opengl/ati/lib/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 && emerge desktop-acceleration-helpers

The symlink is needed due some bug in the ATI driver.
Also have a look here.

I may whenever I am feeling saucy. Regardless, I somehow got it to work with XGL roughly 5 minutes ago - though, I will keep that command in mind for later use.

My emerge has been retarded lately and doesn't /feel/ like installing anything properly, I guess I will take care of that at a later time.

Many thanks,

If you read my earlier post carefully, you'll see that, apart from my sig. mentioning I have an ATI GPU, the result of eselect opengl show is "ati". AIGLX has worked with ATI since version 8.42.3-r10:

If you read my earlier post carefully, you'll see that, in the case where I was using XGL with my ATI GPU (Item 1 in my earlier post), direct rendering was not working (direct rendering: No)

As for your comment that "DRI is angry", DRI is not necessary for XGL and Compiz Fusion to work with an ATI GPU. Apart from the code quoted in my earlier post, see also the text under the fourth bullet point on the following Web page:

http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl

Direct rendering is active if running glxinfo|grep direct on top of Xorg (not Xgl!) shows you "Yes". On top of Xgl this will always show you "No". Unfortunately, for Xorg having direct rendering is a synonym for having accelerated graphics, and it is more difficult to detect whether hardware acceleration is available than it is to detect direct rendering.

If you have managed to get Compiz Fusion working again with XGL then by all means stick with what you have got. But, as joost stated, XGL is now deprecated under SL and is no longer supported for ATI. In fact, if you were to emerge the latest ATI driver and desktop acceleration helpers you would see a message to that effect (not to mention that the latest version of Acceleration Manager does not have XGL as an option any more). If, in future, you want to move to AIGLX then the following post is a good guide (it worked for SL x86-64 3.4f, even if the post is in a thread relating to PE 1.1):
