Nvidia 6800gs no wide screen 720p need help please

I've just started to use Sabayon linux and although I can get full 3D desktop support,my screen resolution will only go up to 800*600. My video card is a Nvidia 6800gs, which is showing up as a 6800GT version. I don't think this is a problem. But would really like to run this card at 1280*720(720pHD).
I understand that I may need to edit the xorg.conf file. But don't know how,as I am very new to Linux! Can someone help please?
