wireless on inspiron 1420

Postby hippomofatumas » Tue Aug 28, 2007 0:11

hi everyone,

im brand new to sabayon, and everything gentoo. ive been using and have been happy with ubuntu for a long time. but on this new laptop here, ubuntu wasn't working right (at least not 7.04, got hopes for 7.10).

i was very pleased with the install of sabayon, graphics are working and so is wired internet, but my wireless isnt working or i dont know how to use it right. i think when it is in "roaming mode" it is seeing all of the wireless connections in surrounding apts and it is definitely seeing mine. but i cant connect to it. i dont have any wep or wpa set up yet. i do have a static ip on my windows partition, but when i tried to set it here all of the networks disappeared.

please help me get wireless up and running!

thanks

What wireless card are you using? You're going to need to modprobe the driver (if it isn't already listed in lsmod) and then run net-setup to configure a static IP.

its an intel 4965, they only make one variety. at the moment i dont have a driver installed because nothing worked lol, but i think the one that would work best would be iwlwifi or whatever its called off of intellinuxwireless.org. the problem is i did what i was supposed to do, and it didnt work. i think i could also use ndiswrapper with a windows driver, but if there is a linux driver out there, might as well use it right? i tried net-setup when i had the driver installed and i still could not connect to any networks. the only problem i could see there is that i was using the same static ip as i have set on my windows partition, but i dont think that is a bad thing.

should i just try the walkthrough again?

Sabayon is renowned for having top-notch driver support and detection. You already have this driver installed and compiled as a module. Try lsmod to see if it's running. If it isn't:

Code: Select all
# modprobe iwlwifi

As root.

i just tried the how to again:

http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?p=iw ... to-iwlwifi

with no luck.

the driver is iwl4965, modprobe returned no errors, so it is running. remember, i can see all of the networks around me i just cant connect to any of them.
