Must use net-setup for wireless?

Postby bastapaparatzi » Thu Aug 23, 2007 0:48

Hi All,

I've got a Broadcom, BCM94311 card in my Dell Inspiron 9400. It works fine, but only when I use net-setup to setup the card. None of the other network utilities will configure the card. What am I doing wrong? Why is this? The other utilities (Knetworkmanager, network-admin) let me configure the card, but never apply the settings.

Thanks!

What version of SL are you using? If you search around you should find your solution since that card is discussed to death. 3.4a and broadcom don't get along, 3.4e fixes it be reverting back the drivers.

I'm sorry...thought I'd mentioned that. 3.4e. It doesn't seem to have been fixed for me. Net-setup is the only way to get it to work.

I dug around the forums and it seems to work now. It's frustratingly limited, though. I can't for example, set an IP address--it assigns one for me. I want 0.101, but it gives me 0.100 for no apparent reason. Whatever; it works. But I don't understand it.

so it's using dhcp than I take it

You have to setup a static ip if you want a specific ip

No, it assigned a static IP, but I don't know how it chose it. It doesn't give me the option of setting an IP; either DHCP or whatever it assigns.

than you must not have setup the network properly /etc/conf.d/net cause what you put in the net file is permanent and you need to also remove networkmanager from default start up.
