Problem with Atheros Wifi card - can´t get it working.

Postby Torture » Sun Jul 15, 2007 2:41

I have a new notebook, Toshiba A135 and I am trying to get my wi fi working on Sabayon.
I have tried several things but still can´t get it working.

The card as shown on lspci is:

Ethernet controllerÑ Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG 802.11 b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

So far, what I´ve done is:
emerge madwifi-ng
Modprobe ath_pci

I check that the modules are running:
lsmod |grep ath_pci
ath_pci
ath_rate_sample
wlan
ath_hal

are all running.

ifconfig -a

All I get is the eth0 and lo nics.

if I do iwconfig, I get
lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions

Could anyone tell me what is it that I am missing?

Thanks!

do you have the knetworkmanager in your systray? Have you tried clicking on the wireless connection, sometimes it may take a couple tries. There is a new version in the overlay too

to update the overlay
# layman -s sabayon

# emerge -u knetworkmanager

I have atheros too and it works great for me

Thanks for the quick reply wolfden.

I am new to sabayon and gentoo, I´ve always used Debian, so I am not familiar with the commands.

I tried what you suggested, but it still won´t work.

I have the knetworkmanager 0.1.

One strange thing that I notice is that when I open the menu for the Knetworkmanager, first thing I get is the Wired Devices just under that the Wired Network.
Under options I have the option to Disable Wireless, but there is still no signs of any wireless thingy going on.

Any other idea what else could I try?

under my Knetworkmanager I can see my wireless connection - I can just click on that and it will take off trying to connect.

What version of sabayon linux are you using? The latest kernel supports wireless better. That is also in the overlay. Might just want to wait for 3.4 final release, which has latest kernel.

otherwise

emerge sabayon-sources

than follow the wiki of upgrading kernel

Thanks again Wolfden, I was able to get my soundcard working now, but still no news of the wifi card.

I updated the kernel to the latest version, uninstalled and reinstalled the knetworkmanager, uninstaled and reinstalled the madwifi-ng drivers, and now I get the following error message when installing:

Code: Select all
 *   CONFIG_WLAN_80211:  is not set when it should be.
 * Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
 * Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems.
 * Once you have satisfied these options, please try merging
 * this package again.

 * A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/net-wireless/madwifi-ng-0.9.4/temp/build.log'.

Any idea how to get this fixed, or should I just give it up and reinstall?

Thanks!

Well, I finally got it working.
What I did was:
1 - updatede my kernel
2 - when I rebooted I was getting a problem with the knetworkmanager, so I uninstalled it, restarted.
3 - reinstalled knetworkmanager
4 - installed madwifi drivers
5 - loaded the module with modprobe
6 - ifconfig and voila! wifi was there :D
