Need help with Linksys Router (Complete and Total Newb)

Postby DeanMcKnight01 » Mon Jun 04, 2007 23:17

I just need to know what to do in general, like I don't even know where to start.
The box says it's a PCI Adapter for a desktop. The model number is WMP54G.
Any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi

What version of SabayonLinux are you using and is it the mini or DVD version.

Also, on hardware issues the best thing to do in order to help us answer is open up a command konsole, (type su and enter root password).
Now can you copy and paste the output of either one of the two following commands:
1) lspci - This gives you info on all PCI hardware devices. Or,
2) lsusb - This gives you info on all USB hardware devices.

Now, the WMP54G is a wireless network adapter. Can you find the revision number which will be 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 or 4.1. Check here where to locate it if you can http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit ... e=download

Cheers

Sry silly questions:

Do you need help installing it / how to into the computer ?
Do you need help to try and make it work ? In any OS or just in Sabayon ?
Do you have a copy of Sabayon yet ?

Do you have a wireless router this will connect to for internet / local network ?

You should likely have a internet connection via modem / adsl / cable. Then have a wireless router connected to the modem / cable modem / adsl modem and this will send signal to the pci card once instaled in the computer . Same way as a fancy FM radio or walki talky.

If I did not mention something you need help with just add it.

For downloads provided you have internet connection up and running you might want to download sabayon from the downloads link.

You have a PCI wireless card from Lynksys. You apparently want help installing it.

Take a look at this:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/ans ... WRAPPER_11

Although this is for slackware linux much of it may apply. Do a search in the gentoo forums for this wireless card.

It seems that this wireless card uses two different types of chipsets, either a broadcom or a RaLink. See below:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-24 ... 4c7957729c

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/slackw ... -11-a.html

You will need to determine which chipset your wireless NIC ("Network Interface Card") uses.

Lucky for you Sabayon Linux is one of the best at supporting broadcom and RaLink chipsets. Good luck and search the gentoo forums, it seems that there is good info there.

In fact, you might be able to just install it and reboot and find that it works. I have a similar card, it was a bit of a nuisance with earlier versions, but with 3.3 it just works.

You did not say if you need advice on the physical aspect of getting the card into the computer. If so you can just search for "install network PCI card" in Google or Yahoo or whatever. EG:

Absolutely. I have the same Linksys NIC and it works...not as well as an Atheros chipset card(great sensitivity)..but it works. The drivers should already be in the kernel.
have fun
