Ping Problem with Sabayon 10

I put Sabayon 10 SpinBase on an old (over 10 years) Celeron computer with 192MB RAM. It runs but I have a problem pinging or sshing to it from other computers on my LAN. The firewall is off.

When I 1st boot the offending computer, it does not respond to ping or ssh but if I ping one of my other computers from the offending computer, then all the computers on my LAN can ping and ssh to the offending computer.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

How are you pinging it? By hostname or ip address?

What networking equipment do you have on your home network? A single router or hub? Are all computers on your network communicating directly via a single router, or do you have any interposing equipment such as a network switch?

Also, when you boot your old computer, does it appear on the router's GUI for network management?

LAN has a single router, Linksys (Cisco) WRT54GS, 3 computers - 2 wifi, 1 wired, connect to router on 192.168.0 subnet. Old computer is the 4th on the network, wifi connected. It has 2 wifi adapters, one connects to LAN and the other connects to WAN on 192.168.1 subnet. It functions as a gateway to share Internet with all computers on my LAN.

The router does not have a list of IP or MAC addresses associated with it, it has a table of DHCP clients but that is empty because I am using static IP addresses.

iwconfig on the old computer shows the ESSID of the router and the old computer can ping the router or any computer on the LAN. The problem is other computers on the LAN cannot ping or ssh to the old computer until it initiates contact with the LAN.
