Slow Wifi in SL 9

Postby Arch3r » Mon Jun 11, 2012 3:24

I'm new in SL, I use SL 9 X86 G.

The main issue is that my wifi connection is very slow at the point that is unusable, but with the ethernet works perfects,

I Use a HP EliteBook 8540w

iwconfig
Code: Select all
IEEE 802.11abgn  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=off
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:on

ifconfig
Code: Select all
 flags=4098<BROADCAST,MULTICAST>  mtu 1500
        ether 00:24:d7:14:4a:2c  txqueuelen 1000  (Ethernet)
        RX packets 3786  bytes 2777949 (2.6 MiB)
        RX errors 0  dropped 0  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 4852  bytes 710114 (693.4 KiB)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

Really? 48 views and not even a reply in this thread, I was quite confortable about sabayon, really fancy and powerful but the community is not so good, I have everything running perfect but the problem is with the WIFI, this dont happend in other distros, so is time to change.

I was a happy user of Arch, and have all working perfect, then SL 9 came out and want to give a try, but just dont work.

Now I'm downloading the last nighlybuild of arch for install after my last class of today.

Good bye to SL, maybe I'll give a try in 4 month, maybe not.

You didn't get a reply on the same day and complained? If 48 people read your thread and did not reply, it's because they don't have your hardware and didn't know the solution to your problem, not because "the community is not so good". You need to learn to have some patience and courtesy. Anyway, I'm glad to read that you have gone back to being "a happy user of Arch" with "all working perfect".

To any SL users with the same hardware as the OP (HP EliteBook 8540w) who end up here searching for a solution to a wireless problem, please post the output of the following commands issued as root user in a Konsole/Terminal window:

Code: Select all
uname -a
lspci
lsusb
lsmod
ifconfig
iwconfig
rc-status
tail -n 1000 /var/log/messages | grep -i --text error
dmesg | grep -i wifi
dmesg | grep -i wireless
rfkill list all

(N.B. Install the package net-wireless/rfkill if you don't already have it installed.)

Also, Google tells me that the wireless controller in that model of laptop does not work well with NetworkManager + dhclient, but does with Wicd + dhcpcd. The installed DHCP client in SL happens to be dhcpcd, so you could try using Wicd networkmanager instead of NetworkManager to see if that helps. Also check the machine's BIOS to make sure wireless is not disabled. If those don't help, some other tips to try are given in the SL Forums post Re: really slooow internet surfing and downloading.
