No network connection XFCE

Postby birdman » Sat May 05, 2012 12:22

I installed Sabayon XFCE on my T42 ThinkPad last December. It has been very reliable. However I turned it on today and do not have any network connections. I normally use wireless but have also plugged in a cable. I have used 'ifconfig' and tried bringing up the network from there with no luck. I have tried rebooting using kernel 3.1 rather than the current 3.2 but that made no difference. I have booted using an Ubuntu live distro and the hardware is working fine (hence letting me communicate with you now). What steps should I take to reactivate my network connection? I have looked in the messages log after trying to activate using ifconfig and the kernel message just says that the network card is not ready?

Sounds like you may have the same or similar problem as here:

I too lost wireless connection on the last Sabayon-weekly update of the 29th April.
The problem has been fixed apparently for the next update of 6th May.
Others may give a more informed reply.

Thanks kwacorn that all makes sense. I don't fire up the laptop that often and will have picked up that last update and not booted up again until yesterday. The question now is how I apply the fix without a network? I associate Network Manager with Gnome. It isn't visible with XFCE. Is there a specific package that I can download from my desktop (that doesn't run Sabayon) and put on to a USB drive for transfer?

I was bit by this bug too. That is a good question, how do you fix your network connection without a network.
Here's what I did. I keep a copy of the latest Sabayon ISO on my system, just for things like this. About 2 weeks
ago after I upgraded, python2.3 was wiped off my system. I was able to copy python from the ISO. I did the same thing with NetworkManager.
> mkdir /mnt/livecd
> mkdir /mnt/sabayon
> mount ~/Downloads/Sabayon8.iso /mnt/livecd -o loop=/dev/loop0
> mount /mnt/livecd/livecd.squash /mnt/sabayon -o loop=/dev/loop1
> cp /mnt/sabayon/usr/sbin/NetworkManager /usr/sbin
> reboot

The mount is a 2 step process. First you mount the ISO. That gives you
access to the contents of the ISO image. Then you mount the livecd.squash,
which is a squashfs filesystem.

I'm at work right now, so I think the path to NetworkManager is in /usr/sbin.

I find it a good idea to keep the Sabayon ISO handy.

Is your laptop usually connected to your home network via Wifi (I guess using WPA2)?
You could perform this following from terminal in XFCE:
1.stopping NetworkManager => /etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop
2.starting wpa_supplicant => /etc/init.d/wpa_supplicant start
3.waiting few seconds
4.running dhcpcd

You should be connected... I performed this scenario in order to be able to upgrade my system last tuesday

Thanks for the tips. I will not have time to look at this until the weekend but at least I now have a plan on how to get things working.

I do not have /usr/bin/NetworkManager Both suggested solutions depend on it. The network appears to be controled from scripts in /etc/rc.d/ Not sure what to do?
